The Fairytale Ending

Hans Christian Andersen store, Copenhagen, DenmarkAccording to most Danes, Hans Christian Andersen, the 19th century author of classic stories like The Ugly Duckling, The Emperor's New Clothes, and The Little Mermaid, is the most renowned historical Danish figure. In Copenhagen, you can't go far without a HC Andersen reference. A Hans Christian Andersen gift shop (equipped with animatronic characters) here. The walk-through-his-life-story Wonderful World of HC Andersen there. And a larger than life statue of the man pitched right next to Copenhagen's City Hall. All the tributes to this tale-teller appear fitting now as they seem comparable to my feelings of wonder for this city.

Spread The Word

That word is hygge. With an eternally confusing pronunciation like hoo-ga, of course.
They say it's as tough to define the Danish concept of hygge as it is to pronounce. Comfort. Fun. Cozy. Enjoy. Relaxing with good friends or loved ones. Usually with candlelight. Definitely with good food and drink. Often associated with Danish Christmas and family celebrations. It's a noun. It's a verb. It's an adjective.

It's Not Easy Being Green

Danish design and architecture is world-renowned, highly acclaimed, and often visually very impressive. It is evident as simple, functional, sometimes stark, clean lines in everything from superstructures to spoons. It seems that Danes take great pride in artistic endeavors and that is obvious in Danish design. One of the cool, inviting shops I happened upon and of which I've since become a regular, Designer Zoo, houses Danish designers' art work and creations. Or maybe you're aware of typically-too-rich-for-my-blood Bo Concept- a Danish design house and retailer. Denmark has also ranked for decades as one of the most energy-efficient countries in Europe. But in Copenhagen, amidst all of this sleekness and sophistication, lies something absolutely fascinating. On the exact opposite of the sleekness and sophistication spectrum.
