San Diego Series: Starlite

If you can't make up your mind whether to sip drinks under the stars on a casual outdoor patio or hunker down for some serious belly-up-to-the-bar damage, you're in luck. Starlite has both. Located on busy India St. just north of downtown's Little Italy, cars race by without a second glance at this local, hipster watering hole-in-the-wall. But saunter through the intriguing, hexagonal portal of its entry and you're greeted by a cool, dimly lit space with a massive custom chandelier over an equally imposing sunken bar. Its retro 1960's chic decor and vibe have you waiting for the Rat Pack to walk in. Make your way to the back exit and find a more stripped-down, rustic patio with its own bar and outdoor ambience. Cacti included. With accommodating staff and casual feel both inside and out, this is where the locals go.

Locals' tips: There are only several Starlite parking spots and limited street parking in the vicinity so your best bet is to cab it. Happy Hour runs 7 days a week from 5-7pm (and Fridays 4-7pm) with $4 beer and well drink specials. Mules, always served in copper mugs, have a great reputation here (aka potent and strong) so be sure one is on your tasting agenda. It can get a bit crowded on weekend nights, but that never seems to compromise the service or ability to hear your frirends. Bonus: late night eats if you need something to soak up your drink menu picks (til 10:00pm Sun-Thurs and midnight Fri-Sat). Rarely a line. Never a cover.

Hey Locals! We want to know what your favorite Little Italy haunt is. Chime in below!
